Most misunderstandings about herbal formulas and their uses happen when we try to relate them to specific illnesses that they are good for. Rather, we should look at them as building blocks for good health in specific systems and/or tissues. They build, and then maintain, good health.
Herbal formulas do not treat illnesses; herbal formulas are used to reestablish healthy tissue conditions in the organs and systems of the body. If the organs and systems are healthy and properly nourished, then bacteria and germs, and all the mystical, magical, nasty things that make us sick have no waste matter to grow on. They are unable to increase their numbers beyond our bodys natural ability to fight them.
When determining whether an herb is good to substitute for a certain chemical, we must first consider which systems or tissues in the body are weak or what failure in them has occurred, in order to determine the support the body needs by herbal therapy. Think of chemicals as a controlling, manipulating, selfish mother-in-law. Now, think of herbal therapy as a loving, supporting companion. Your choice is basically between the controlling and the supporting.
In the past, HAY ASZ was known mainly for its hay fever relief properties. Now, I tell people to take it for colds, sore throat, runny nose, cough, congestion, asthma, flu, etc. Think of this formula not as a treatment for specific illnesses, but rather as a nutrient or a tonic to strengthen the entire respiratory system. HAY ASZ is good for any and all respiratory disorders.
I have worked as an herbalist, in the great DRY state of New Mexico for the past 20 years. Perhaps this information will be helpful during the dry season:
Swab the sinuses with a good herbal salve, such as Comfrey-Gold salve or Marshmallow Root salve. Swab deeply and generously. Lie on your back while swabbing, as in this position this allows salve to run down the back of the throat. If you dont have a good salve, use a cold pressed oil.
Usually at this time, the bodies craving for sugars and refined carbohydrates increases. This is because the acid/alkaline balance in the body is disturbed. One of the best ways to balance this, and lessen the junk food cravings, is with 1 tsp. apple cider vinegar (raw, unfiltered, unpasteurized), and 2 tsp. raw honey (raw, unfiltered, unpasteurized), added to 7 oz. of clean, filtered water. This mixture is taken twice a day. We call this Tea Honey.
Traditional use of the contents: Hyssop Leaf: has been used to relieve sinus congestion and sore throat. Marshmallow Root: has been used to soothe the mucous membranes in the sinus and the lungs. Brigham Tea has been helpful in relieving sinus congestion, sore throat, headache and watery eyes. Alfalfa and Juniper has been used to help relieve allergies. Oregano and Paprika, which is a natural decongestant.
